I have a Mack RD6, and am having the lifter and cam replaced for the 3rd time in 2 years. Has anyone experienced the same issues? What is causing this? We have regular PMs done. Any input is greatly appreciated! Not sure but I was told the reason those lifters failed was a bad batch of them due to incorrect temperature of oven when they were made. I replaced mine and apparently they were a updated batch. Are they replacing all your lifters or only the one that failed.
Wow Alex, that is good to know. It also happened 2 times on my buddy's truck.
So are you saying that the lifters that were original to the truck came from a bad batch or the replacement lifters? This is just crazy, not even gettingmiles out of them.

I'm wondering now if its a problem with parts or labor or user error. Sounds like cam break in trouble. A few years back the EPA had graphite removed, reduced from most oils which aids in metal on metal clearances like cam shafts. There is products available to help break in. Just a thought. Is the proper spec oil being used? I was always told mack cams and lifter problems were traced to not letting the truck warm up long enough before operating it.
Is a Mack dealership doing the repair? The "H" ring in the block that holds the lifter could be to high or turned. The dealership should have the tools to check "H" ring alinment. If they are installing ceramic lifter you must have spring loaded push tubes on the exhaust side.
Cam break-in. After the first replacement cam failed someone should have done a better job of failure analysis, especially if a dealer was doing the work. The only time the lifters should be replaced is on a flat tappet camshaft since the lobe and lifter face have a matching wear pattern.
On a roller cam there is no need to replace all the good lifters as long as they are current parts. The camshaft is billet steel and hardened, the roller lifter never develops a pattern on the lobe or the roller.
I do prefer to replace all ceramic lifters though because the tiniest imperfection will lead to a failure. That and if you accidentally drop one or it falls out of the bore, i would not trust it after that. That's just me though.
This time, one of the ceramic rollers broke off. The first time we had to replace the lifters and cam, we had the work done at a Bruckner's Mack dealership in Dallas. It took over a month-and-a-half and the work only lasted a couple of months before one of the new Mack screws broke due to being over-tightened-we think We took it to our own mechanic the second time due to we didn't want our truck to be out of service another 2 months, and the dealership refused to take any blame for parts or labor.
We filled out tons of paperwork and they would not warranty any of the parts even though we returned the parts to them.I have the lifters held up with magnets and the eup's are out and the rollers for them and I have the two bolts out of the thrust plate on the front. It just wont move. I've pryed, pulled, I whacked it with a dead blow thinking it might free it up but nothing.
Hope not, thats inside the bell housing. E-6 and E-7 cams take 2 people to remove without the cam removal tool. One person below with a pry bar to support the rear of the cam and the other to slowly pull it out. On an e-tech engine the cam weighs about 90 lbs with gear so having the removal tool is almost a must.

It can be done like the others but it is a pain. Usually if a cam will not budge then a lifter somewhere is still too low. It was a lifter hanging. I made some magnet sticks to hold them up and one had let go.
Once they were all suspended on the magnets, it slid right out. Thanks for the info! You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.
Any valve train failure that results in excessive valve lash or subjects the valve lifter body to rotational force, can result in the valve lifter H-ring dislodging or rotating out of alignment in the lifter bore. These types of failures include a broken rocker arm, broken rocker shaft, broken rocker shaft mounting bolts, etc. When any such failure has occurred, the H-ring must be checked to determine if it is dislodged. Any dislodged H-ring must be removed from the lifter bore and properly reinstalled.

As far as I can tell it looks like the front cam bearing was the first to go.
Then without the support of the bearing, flex broke the cam off before the second lobe.
This made some noise early on. The driver called us and was able to drive it to the shop before it gave away on a test drive around the block. It made lots of racket before it let loose, Dad said he heard it clattering off the houses on the sides of the road as they drove by.
Too bad they didn't know where the noises were coming from before they took off The driver said he thought it was the tranny clunking under load. I pulled the covers off the top and found 4 broken rocker arms and some bent pushrods.
No chance of an easy fix on this one E7 early engines had alot of cam problems but if that engine was mine i would replace the dampler on the crank if the block is ok.
In most cases vibrations break the cam and then it will get the front brg because nothing to suport it. Mack had a lot of trouble with bad cams I think between 99 and Factory wised up to the fact that it was faulty metalurgy in production of some cams. Quite a bit were recalled under warranty, Mack replaced them. I got an 01 CH with an E7 2 years ago. My dealer brought up the vin. Well, 6 mos. Took It to the dealer.Lash Adjuster Removal Tool
